This self-drafted dress is my first pattern on my journey to teaching myself how to sew. I decided to get my feet wet in the drafting process right out the door. I wanted to see if I could teach myself how to draft before I tackled commercial patterns.
One thing I know, is that I should have chosen a different type of fabric for my first project. This is an organza fabric and for me, it’s way too slippery for a beginner. It was cut on the bias, but the next time I make it, I will try out the slash and spread method.
Although I love this dress, there are a few things I will do differently next time. Overall, I love the fit and cut of this dress. It’s still too chilly in my area for me to wear this outside. As soon as the weather gets a little warmer it will be the first thing I wear.
I only have one picture of this dress. The other two got deleted and I didn’t have the time to re-take them. Perhaps when I wear it I will take some more. Most of the time it has been really cloudy and we have a lot of rain. The next thing on my agenda is to get some good lighting. That way I don’t have to just rely on natural light… although that’s really the best.
Well, I hope this has inspired you in some way, until next time, design something, go ahead and make it, and don’t forget to share it so you can inspire someone else!
